Static Productions did not begin with the intention of becoming a full-fledged studio, but rather a way for owner/Cheif Engineer Peter LaGrasse to record his own music. Having written and recorded his frreinds and with various bands throughout the 90's, the birth of Static Productions in 2000 allowed his services to extend further into the New England Music community. Static Productions, based in North Kingstown, Rhode Island, is now entertaining its eight year and has made a name for itself as a place for local and independent artist to record and leave with a top quality product and experience."Overall, Its about rock," explains LaGrasse. Static Productions is a genre-specific studio, whose roster of artists (including Burned In Effigy, Train Of Thought, Something For Nothing) spans the punk-hardcore-metal spectrum. "The music drives me to make a great production. I have to like what I'm working with, so for me, metal, hardcore and other rock projects make that happen."The studio offers recording, mixing and production, as well as in-house mastering for the economic-minded artist. LaGrasse, believing that mastering is an essential part of the recording process, attends all out side mastering sessions with the bands until the final project is finished. Of course, a studios core is made up of quality gear just as much as quality service. Static primarily employs API mic pre's, Apogee AD/DA converters through Apogee's Symphony system, and Logic Pro with a quad-Core Mac Pro. "I happen to use Logic; it;s what I grew up with and have used for the past 10 years. Software is dispensable, good ho-end hardware is not." explains LaGrasse. LaGrasse also uses a fair amount of post-processing and EQ, thought only when necessary. " I just do what sounds good to my ears. You can't be afraid to carve out a sound if needed." And it is this decisive, "just do it" mentality that many bands seek in an engineer/producer. LaGrasse involves himself in the creative process to varying degrees, depending upon and how defined their sound is. " I like to have as much input as bands will allow without stepping on toes. The younger bands need to be molded a bit more so I usually have much more creative input with them." As much as LaGrasse is focused on achieving a great sound, Static Productions also wants to promote a relationship with artist that is both solid and relaxed. "It's extremely important that any band/musician believe in and trust the work of their engineer/producer. We all need to feel comfortable in order to create something great. Just give me what you expect me to give you, 100%." www.staticproductions.com Dana White ~ Specialized Mastering "Peter brings a level of commitment and skill to his projects that is rare. He is a true advocate for the artist. He is consistently going way above and beyond the call of duty, with first rate results." - Peter's work smokes a lot of the mixes that are coming from mega-buck SSL rooms that I hear. Tyler ~ Something For Nothing "Thank you so much for the hard work you put into this album. It came out great, and we're going to be getting the ball rolling on releasing it soon. You're are a legend."Alex ~ Burned In Effigy. "Yo Pete, just repeating myself as earlier, You did an amazing job on our record. Just wanted to thank you for the countless extra hours put into this album, much appreciated." Jamel ~ Last Dying Word "Peter is the man, anyband wanting to record needs to choose this studio. Pete works super hard, he is the first engineer that could keep up with our work ethic.... Pete knows so much about recording and music he able to freaking pump out the best sound that a band could possibly have." Ed ~ Train Of Thought "Pete is great guy with tons of enthusiasm, easy to work with, very knowledgeable and has great insight!!!" Feds ~ Fallen Glory "Peter, you my friend are the fucking man another chapter sounds fucking amazing. thank you." Marc ~ Dirty Jokes "Pete, Thanks so much for all your hard work and insight. I think we will be taking a lot from this experience. You were a pleasure to work with and I'm sure we will be back in the future!" Ken Sisson ~ music writer/reviewer/musician "Pete is a recording god!" Static Productions is a professional recording studio owned and operated by Peter LaGrasse. A: Before booking anything, we need to meet and discuss your project. We can then find and schedule days to record. On the average we book about one month - two months in advance. Your sessions are NOT booked until a deposit is given. Deposits are non-refundable but are subtracted from your balance at the end of your time here. Q: Can we bring guests to the recording session? A: NO - DON''T BRING THEM! They interrupt and slowdown the recording and creative process. And I dont have time to babysit, work around or entertain. If anyone attends the session, make sure they have a critical part in the creative music making process.Friends, girl friends, moms, dads, ------ out. Managers, Vocal Coaches, Photographers. If you must, but they will be locked in the control room with me the entire time and in the way slowing things down. Its a long day.......... Don't make it longer. Q: What should we bring to record? A: You should bring Drums, Amps & Cabinets, Guitars and extra strings. However you can use, and I suggest you do, the studios 4x12 marshall w/ celestion vintage30s and or the 4x12 cab w/ celestion G12T75s. You are also more than welcome to use the MesaBoggie Triple Rectifier and or the Marshall JMP 100w tube head and the various distortion pedals. We also have a Fender Precision Bass and an American Fender Strat. Q: How long will it take to record? A: Depending on what type of production, Demo or Album production time will vary. We will talk about this when we meet. Q: Will we record everything seperate or will we play together? A: Both ways are possible, and both have their benefits. Most bands record all of their instruments live, and then add vocals/overdubs as needed. It is also possible to just track drums, or drums and another instrument with scratch tracks as well. Then continue layering instrument over instrument. We can discuss this in more detial durning your visit to tour the studio. Q: What should I know about the recording session ? Before and During. A: There are many things you should know. We will cover more when you visit the studio, but briefly: • Unless you have unique effects, you will record individual tracks clean and add effects later.( Distortion is NOT an effect, it IS part of your tone) • New strings on guitars. New heads on drums. (properly tuned and seated) New head on your snare is manditory! • New tubes in tube gear. If your tubes are older than 8months, replace them. • Singers: Always bring water but don't use ice! Ice constricts your vocal chords. Hot tea with lemon and honey works well to relax your vocal chords. • Keep guests out! Guests can slowdown and distract the session from its goals. • Tune up often ! • Trust the engineer or producer, they know the facts about engineering, mixing and mastering. Q: Can we have a cd of the mixes to take home after everyday of recording? A: NO, you did'nt think i'd say that did you? There are several reasons why I do not give "rough mix" CDs, This goes for everyone, not just a few. I DO NOT do this for anyone. I would be more than happy to explain why when we meet.Audio restoration is a generalized term for the process of removing imperfections (such as hiss, crackle, noise, and buzz) from sound recordings. Audio restoration can be performed directly on the recording medium (for example, washing a gramophone record with a cleansing solution), or on a digital representation of the recording using a computer (such as a AIFF or WAV file). Record restoration is a particular form of audio restoration that seeks to repair the sound of damaged records. Modern audio restoration techniques are usually performed by digitizing an audio source from analog media, such as lacquer recordings, optical sources and magnetic tape. Once in the digital realm, recordings can be restored and cleaned up using dedicated, standalone digital processing units such as declickers, decracklers, dehissers and dialogue noise suppressors, or using digital audio workstations (DAWs). DAWs can perform various automated techniques to remove anomalies using algorithms to accomplish broadband denoising, declicking and decrackling, as well as removing buzzes and hums. Often audio engineers and sound editors use DAWs to manually remove "pops and ticks" from recordings, and the latest spectrographic 'retouching' techniques allow for the suppression or removal of discrete unwanted sounds. You may launch the music player at the top or select from samples below. Informally, it can be described as follows. Each sound to which we listen includes the original, useful part of the sound, usually referred to as the “signal”, and an additional, unwanted part acquired in the process of transmitting or recording. This unwanted portion of the sound is usually referred to as “noise”. Noise can come from a number of sources. For example, when you make a cell phone call from your car, the signal is your voice. The associated noise can be composed of a number of other sources, including the traffic, the car engine, distortion from the telephone microphone, or distortion from the cellular network. The purpose of audio restoration is to minimize these unwanted noises while at the same time preserving the original signal to the greatest extent possible. There are different methods for restoring audio. The method you select should be based upon the nature of the distortions found in the audio material and on the source of the audio signal. This primer focuses on the audio restoration of recorded materials and primarily on recorded musical material. Just 15 years ago, high quality audio restoration activities were confined to a small circle of audio professionals. These activities required specialized labs of equipment and their costs were unreasonable for a typical consumer. When sound digitization and digital signal processing became widely available, these new technologies allowed for the replacement of costly analog equipment with specialized, but very complex, software applications. The recent proliferation of high-speed PCs equipped with quality sound cards has made audio restoration activities even more affordable. Today, digital audio restoration has almost become a mainstream technology. Its close cousin, digital image restoration, is already widely used by a variety of people whose only qualification is that they have access to a PC and a digital camera. One of the major motivations in developing audio restoration technology has been the drive to digitize LPs and cassettes. Many people have a collection of music favorites stored on these older media. Quite often, they wish to preserve their collection and maintain or improve the quality of the audio recordings that, without intervention, would eventually degrade over time. Since not all old recordings will be released in quality digital format (CD, DVD, etc.), many people want to preserve the collection they already own. This primer describes various software methods that are used to restore audio recorded from an LP, tape, or from a microphone. When such methods are applied correctly, they will not only help to preserve old recordings in an unaltered condition, but they can also significantly improve the quality of the recordings. Computer-based applications designed for audio restoration purposes are available from many audio software developers. For detailed information on the functionality of these programs, please refer to their associated manuals. This primer discusses only the basic principles of working with these applications — not the individual software products themselves.
